MKELIFE: Hamburger Mary’s

Everybody needs a go-to spot (BESIDES the club) to be able to just kick it or hang out with their girls. A low-key place where you can have fun and enjoy each other’s company after a long week. Well, this past summer, we stumbled across a great place just for that!

Birthed in the SOMA district of San Francisco in 1972, Hamburger Mary’s has a 40-year reputation as being an “open-air bar and grille for open-minded people” and has since established itself as a staple in the LGBTQ community. Franchised in almost a dozen US cities, Bay View welcomed Mary’s first Wisconsin location in the summer of 2011. Far from your average burger joint (it should be pointed out that the burgers here are AMAZING), the best thing about Hamburger Mary’s is the fun, care-free atmosphere that you can’t help but to indulge in upon entering the bright, purple bulding on the corner of KK and Becher. The entire staff, and patrons as well, are very welcoming and there is definitely a family-feel to the place.

Mary’s offers a full lunch and dinner menu, in addition to their famous made-to-order burgers. There is more than enough to keep you entertained with several weekly events, including drag shows, “HamBINGO”, and the best karaokee night we’ve ever been to. Not to mention they have GREAT drink specials the other days of the week, because we all know how us Wisconsin gals like to throw ’em back ;).

We celebrated Coco’s 23rd birthday there this past year and wound up having a full-blown concert during karaoke! Although the setting is very close and intimate, the energy was crazy because everyone gets involved in the performances. Ever since then, we’ve been dying to go back; easily the best night out any of us out of our group has had. The crowd isn’t strictly for “the gays”, but if you go you better not be afraid of a few drag queens, who will call you out on the spot at any given moment.

If you’re like us and are bored with the typical club scene and just looking for a fun night out with great food, drinks, and music then you NEED to experience Hamburger Mary’s atleast once in your life!

Just to show you how much fun it is, peep the footage from our “concert” below (couldn’t tell us we wasn’t Beyonce honey!!).
